The cult of Subaru.

By Matt Baumgartner   Add comments

I want a Subaru.  A 2010 black Outback 3.6R.

I’ve never owned a Subaru before, and we never had one growing up, but the way my friends who drive Subaru’s talk about their cars is like no other car loyalty I have ever seen.

Outback

I was out the other night with 4 people, and 3 of them drive Subarus.  And they all started talking about their cars the way mothers talk about their kids. However, this time I actually paid attention.  It was crazy.  It says a lot about Subaru’s quality that they have such loyal customers.  Each one of the current Subaru owners said they would only buy a Subaru.

So here’s a new contest.  Whoever is the 28th commenter will win a new 2010 Subaru Outback, paid for by Friday Puppy.

I’m kidding.

But seriously, I’m gonna take a closer look at this car and see about getting one as my next automobile.  I love the design of it, I love how durable it is, I love how great it would be in the snow, I love how I could throw tons of groceries I don’t ever buy in the back.   I love the Outback so much, you’d think I was a lesbian.  (which by the way, is a huge endorsement for Subarus because lesbians are known in the gay world as having very sensible, well educated taste).

And in case you didn’t know, the Subaru Outback was also named Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year and seems to be on every automobile critic’s 10 best list.

So there you have it.  Me wants a Subaru.

Outbacks are cool, especially the new design, and would have gotten us (the boyfriend and me) through the Vermont snow Friday night way better than my much loved Saab. Although the Saab is great in most conditions, the trip ended up taking us over an hour longer because we had to go around the mountain, rather than over it, which an Outback would have done with ease.

  2. Brian says:

I want one too! i have a volvo xc70 which is somewhat comparable and i like it a lot, but i LOVE the new Outbacks. I saw one a few months ago in the lot outside work and was like WHOA…what is that? ever since i’ve been somewhat obsessed!

  3. Jeff says:

I just bought a 2010 Subaru Forrester and it is by far the best car/suv Ive ever owned. Im a fairly big guy and I have no problems with head room or leg room (either in the front or the back), it has enough storage that I can put something big like a ladder in the back (with the seats down) and I got it two weeks before that first big snow storm and it was AWESOME in the snow. Didnt slip once.

  4. Henry says:

I completley agree. Tell you what, if you buy the 2010 now, when you decide to get something else in a few years, I’ll buy it from you used.

  5. Sean says:

My wife has an Outback and we love it. We’ve had it for about three years now and it is great. But you are really on to something with this cult of Subaru thing. About two or three months after we bought the car we started to notice something very funny. Whenever we parked, wherever we parked, we would return to our car and find another Subaru right next to us. Sometimes we would come back to find the car surrounded by other Subarus, like they were magically drawn to one another. We could park in the most deserted parking lot ever, like say Latham Circle Mall, without another car in sight and inevitibly return to find another Subaru cuddling up to ours. It is too funny. Sometimes I feel like we are part of this middleaged, average American, carclub but without the cool jackets. Join us, I’ll probably end up parked next to you sooner or later, ours is the silver one. See you then.

  6. Michael says:

I don’t own one, but I do love them. Go for it, they are great vehicles and extremely practical.

  7. marjorie says:

We have a forrester. Great car, little noisy, but that’s our only complaint about the car. Our customer service experience wasn’t that great with the dealer on central ave. We switched to CapitalLand Motors in Scotia and they have been awesome!

  8. rebecca says:

Me too Matt! I’ve been a loyal VW since the tender age of 16 – 16 years later I am tired of them… getting my headlight replaced every 3 months, the taillight every 4, the lights on the radio suddenly not working, etc. I feel like the next step is a Subaru, and honestly, I am loving the new Outbacks. Maybe we can matching Outbacks?

    xoxo! Rebecca

    WANT ONE

  10. Randy says:

Make sure you get the V6 as the new car is heavier than the old one. Also the v4 has oil issues later in life.

  11. Kait says:

My father also has decided that his next car will be a Subaru. His reasoning is that there will be plenty of room for him, my mother and his beloved dog when they go on road trips. (Subaru’s back row of seats flip down or so I understand. Thus the decision that the right choice for a new car would be a Subaru

  12. MLM2 says:

As a lesbian it probably was my duty to have a Suburu legacy. (They don’t forget us in their marketing.) It faithfully and remarkably got me back and forth from here to college in NH in terrible weather for many years. When I decided I had to switch to something better environmentally which used less fuel, I gave it to a group way up in the barren north years ago. They donated it to a low income family in dire need of transportation. When I visit this part of the Adirondacks I still see it bopping around doing its job. Sweet.

  13. Christine says:

Never had a subaru, but i hear good things about them as well. Hope you can get one Matt :)

  14. BJ Hart says:

A friend of mine bought a brand new lime green Subaru in 1977…had it for 5 years…never had a problem with it (other than self destructing on it’s last day). He’s been buying Volvos ever since…everytime we get together, he brings up the fact that that little ugly car was the best car I’ve ever had…I’m going to show him your endorsement.

VW guy turned Chevy colbalt guy till I get rid of these dam bills guy…mmm, Subaru???

    PS, still have the Ducati…

  15. E-Liz says:

I got my first Subaru in August and love it. I can’t imagine driving any other car now. Go for it Matt!

  16. Amy says:

I have had a Forrester for 5 years and I love it. Did not like the sales people at Goldstein Subaru on Central, treated me like a dumb girl and called me sweetie and honey one too many times. I went to Advantage Subaru on Hoosick and had a much better experience and they gave me a better deal.

hmmm….waiting for The Original Colleen to tell us how much closer we are to 5000 comments… TOC, plz don’t let us down…

  20. Maureen says:

My very first car was a Subaru — a little one with no A/C. But I loved the way that car handled around corners. I grew up downstate and it doesn’t snow much down there, so I never got to really drive it in the snow. And it was front wheel drive anyway.

Unfortunately, I’ve never had the funds to buy another one. I do miss them though. And my sister, who has 2 in the mountains of California, loves it for driving up the mountain to get home in the snow. She feels very confident about getting home all the time when it snows out there.

  21. Slacker says:

I have a friend that swears by Subarus. I’ve never owned one, but I want an Outback, cuz they just seem so frickin versatile.

  22. Dave says:

I had a 94 legacy i purchased for $400 over a period of 30,000mi i put only gas and $1000 worth of work. The car still ran well when i got rid of it at 225,000mi but i just didn’t want to deal with repairs. The car drove like a champ through up to 2ft of snow. Go for it you will love it

  23. vdub says:

Gonna hurt your chances with Mrs. Lia….

  24. BARV says:

I often laugh about Subaru’s because a lot of people I talk to, do love them, on the driving aspect, a lot of people that follow them, say they are the worst and slowest drivers, makes me laugh!

  25. slilly says:

When you get the Subaru will you let Christy drive it really fast on 787? Just to help break it in?

  26. Sister says:

My best friend has only owned suburus & she swears by them – especially since she can put her kayak in the car!! Only smashed her windshield once!

  27. Christy says:

I was a lesbian a few times. I drive a Forester. You know Matt, anytime you want, you can borrow ours.

  28. Dave says:

Matt, I think the Outback is great choice for you. I liked your Jeep, then Audi and now BMW but the Outback is a very cool car for you. I looks good and is practical and I bet you will not get as many speeding tickets! I have a Jeep now and I am considering the Outback as well. Good luck

  29. Colleen S. says:

We have a 2004 Subaru Outback and a 1997 Subaru Legacy. They are great cars, and the all wheel drive (love that slogan: “transfers power from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip”) is something I wouldn’t want to be without. I agree that the 2010 redesign is awesome!

  30. Jill D says:

Can I buy your old car?? I hear she’s a blast on the highway to drive… Perhaps you could donate it to the wicked poor PhD student who is working a full time and a part time gig to get by?? I’m sure I’m a tax write off somehow!

  31. Liz says:

Bought an Outback 2 years ago just before a road trip. 6,400 miles to Flagstaff and various other places in 3 weeks. Car was great on the trip and is a pleasure to drive. Got black for the first time and boy does it show dirt! Looks great when it’s washed though :)

  32. Mara says:

Subies are amazing. I have a 2008 Legacy and my boyfriend has a 2004 Impreza. Good gas mileage, fun to drive, great handling, safe, great in the snow. I’d never buy anything else. However, I must say… The new ones are hideous. The new design of the Outback (BIG, bulky, SUV-like) is completely different from the old design and a sad progression (or should I say regression?). Subie made a huge mistake, IMO. The 2008 style was great. Good size, low to the ground, no obnoxious Lexus-like front lights… the new one is just way too big and silly looking. So when I say I would never buy anything else… I more mean that I will continue to buy them as long as they go back to their roots – sporty, simple, fun to drive cars that look different from everything else on the road, not JUST like everything else on the road as is the case with the 2010 models. It was a huge disappointment when I saw it. Hideous.

  33. Erin says:

My grandmother got one that was a total lemon new, and they lost a LOT of money on the deal because the transmission problem she had was somehow not covered under the warranty. However, my mother and one of my old boyfriends both own Subarus, and I can’t shut them up about it. It’s for my mother what Volvos were to our family in the 80s and 90s; one of the best damn cars you could buy.

  34. TOC here, ok smarty pants – 415

  35. marnie says:

I think you should contact Subaru and get a free one for advertising for them!!

  36. Peter says:

I just traded in my 1999 Forester (Lesbian owned and approved) for a 2006 Forester. I love my car. To me it has personality and I take it all over hiking and biking. My partner recently bought into the (my) hype and got a 2005 Outback Sport. He now wants to get rid of it……to get a new full size Outback ;)

  37. Hopeful says:

I think the 5,000th commenter should get a ride in Matt’s Subaru (in addition to all the other prizes)!

  38. Debbie says:

While reading my other favorite blog ‘use real butter’ today I came across an old entry of Jen’s & thought you might enjoy reading it. I didn’t realize that once you go Subaru, that’s it. (I thought you’d like that her new one is black like the one you want) Here you go: http://userealbutter.com/2008/11/06/spring-rolls-recipe/

  39. Kim S says:

@#34 TOC – Thanks!… With a few “good posts” (I use that term loosely b/c I think all the posts are good) *rubs brown nose* we might fnid out who is going to Panama by the end of next week!!

  40. mo says:

Oooh, I loved my Subaru!!, and I am not even a lesbian! That thing was awesome in the snow, never had any mechanical issues in the 3 years I had it, and it was so fun to drive. I swore I’d run that thing into the ground! But, I have a tendency to get bored after a while so I got rid of it. It was the first car I was so sad to leave behind at the dealership! I loved Goldstein, btw. The guy at the one on Hoosick St. was telling me all about all the things it had like HEAT and a TRUNK that I just could not…

  41. *off topic* “you know you’ve made it when you have a nickname”

*back on topic* @Kim S – thanks for the nickname by the way, at the next Friday Puppy happy hour I owe you a beverage of your choice (medium size, who do you think I am, Matt?)

Recent calculation 400 or so to go…only I will not be going (thanks to an early bad decision that I have regretted (not really) ever since)

I’ve decided that Matt needs a Hummer, they are really reduced in price because of the economy, and I would get a referral reward – somehow we all knew it would be about me somehow!

  42. lakesider says:

We’re in Florida right now (and cold!). Drove our Subaru down – got great gas mileage. This is our 3rd Outback – still have two running, one is over 175+ miles. Just put triple treads on our newest (a 2004) and it grabs the snow and ice great!
I’m a doc and it’s so reliable in the bad weather.

  43. CC says:

I love both of my Legacy wagons. The ’98 has 227,000 miles on it and runs like a puppy. The ’06 is a real looker(med blue/tinted glass) and is already up to 65,000 miles. I ski, so they are perfect for for getting to the slopes in snowy weather, with relatively good mpg to boot. I’m really amazed at some of the inclement weather they’ve taken me through. Amazing. And, lots of fun to drive…but not as much fun as my Miata MX-5.

  44. Joshua says:

I had a 1984 Subaru. It is to this day my Favorite car ever. The red devil, may you rest in peace.

  45. Jeanne says:

Subarus are great for all of the reasons listed as well as they are super safe! A Subaru Outback saved my mom’s life in a horrific Taconic Pkwy crash. Go for it, Matt!

  46. somebody's mom says:

I’ve owned a Subaru (Legacy) and LOVED how it moved me quickly through the slush and snow. I just needed a little more ‘pick up’ (I like things fast) and so if I was going to own another Subaru, it would be a Forester – Turbo. Vrm-m-m-m!!! Vrm-m-m-m!!!

  47. jae says:

Oh, I wish you were doing the 50 words or less contest. My boyfriend’s old old car was totaled in an accident – he drives for a living and an Outback would be the best gift ever.

  48. Kristi says:

TOC counts comments? Somehow I missed that.

As for the Subaru, I have nothing nice to say, so I’ll stick with what we all learned in nursery school and keep my mouth shut.

  49. Chris V says:

Sean (#4) I love that the Subies congregate in the parking lot! There is a commercial in there somewhere…

  50. Albany Jane says:

Albany John drove this old Subaru (I think it was a legacy) when we first met – a real workhorse 5-speed wagon. I learned how to drive stick in it, and wow, did we ever have some adventures in that gal.

It got to the point where you could hear him coming 2 blocks away (the exhaust was jury rigged ad nauseum) and our neighbors were bitching about the noise. I’m pretty sure the exhaust was coming up through the floor boards, so he finally agreed to buying something to replace it. Either another subaru, or a 5-speed wagon, 4wd, and dark in color.

Jeeze, that was one looooong car search on my end.
