Dreadlocked

kid1dreadI love dreads, always have. My love cultivated in part out of obsession with Bob Marley’s locks and music, partially out of the blonde dreadsĀ Angelina Jolie sported in Gone in 60 Seconds and, mostly, out of my long standing aversion to washing my hair everyday (I won’t link you to a picture of that).

Don’t judge, I think it’s actually better for your hair if you don’t wash it every day. Your scalp produces natural oils that can’t possibly be replicated, no matter how much companies spend on testing.

I am now almost 31 years old and I still haven’t mustered enough nerve to just do it. My hair has never been as long as it currently is which is the main factor in my fear of finally having it done. It scares me to think that the only way to get dreads out of your hair is to cut them out. Is there no alternative?

Well, for me there is one, even if it is somewhat of a temporary circumvention. I can now live vicariously through my offspring! So, as soon as my little munchkin sprouts some hair long enough I’m dreading his noggin.

Or, I can adopt a Hungarian Puli Sheep Dog. I honestly don’t know which option would be most adorable running around the house, an 18 month old with dreads or this dog. Man, dilemma.

they dont have to be cut out.. they can be taken apart – a “take down”. it’s essentially picking them apart…. slowly, with patience, and conditioning.

    you got this!

    do it.

Wow, thanks Jacky – I am seriously considering it.

I rarely post but I must say something about this post. I am a gay male but a woman with dreads can turn me straight. So, Matt, I agree wholeheartedly that when we can adopt, I want a “dreaded” child.

Also, I grew up with a Puli. Not only was the a loyal and fun companion, we used to spend hours playing with her hair. Wow, I just realized I spend countless hours as a child styling hair… foreshadowing???

I feel exactly the same way! I love dreads and have always wanted them, but I feel like my moment has passed. Somehow they just dont seem very professional. . . and if I ever wanted to get rid of them I’d have to cut them out and that wouldn’t be so good. . .
Seeing as how I have no kids, I may have to go the sheepdog route – good thinking!

Kinda funny you mention this, I’ve always wanted to just rock dreads for a week and see how the feel is. It looks awesome, but the process of me growing my hair out for that long is the real pain in the ass. What the hell am I supposed to do with my hair when it’s semi-long? I don’t want to look like Nickleback.

I hate dreads. I think they are gross (although I did think Lenny Kravitz looked great with them). I know there are people who say they are not necessarily dirty and require washing but they just look filthy, sloppy, scummy, etc. Why would anyone want to walk around looking like that?!
Quite honestly, if I saw a small child with them, I would just think their parents were too lazy to properly bathe or groom them. That’s just me though.

better the dog than the child.
