Mint.

Are you the type of person who likes to spend your rent money on shots of Jameson?  Do you use paper towels as toilet paper, tissues and notepad?   Do you go the ATM machine and pray that money comes out?

moneyWe’ve all been there.   I’ve been there a few times.  I was so broke in college that I sold my meal plan back to the college for the money and ended up running out of cash weeks before the end of the semester, without a meal plan.  Not good.  (But thank god for ramen.)

Anyway, if you aren’t that great at managing your money (I’m not), I recommend you look into this website.  It’s called Mint.com

It’s a simple website designed to help you organize, categorize and manage your spending (in a very easy to understand way).   And most importantly, it sets realistic spending budgets for you.  I recently started using it, and Mark has been using it for a while.   However, he’s so annoying with it.  He talks about it like it’s an actual person.  ”Oh shoot, Mint.com is not gonna be happy that I just bought that”.  And then I roll my eyes.  And then he kisses me because I’m so fucking adorable.

Mark has been known to have one or seven too many Jack & Cokes and forgets the next morning that he bought the entire bar a round of shots.  And Mint.com helps him with that.  It links right up to your bank and your credit cards, and it shows you (in chart form) how much you’re spending on things you probably shouldn’t be spending a lot of money on (booze, porn, pleated pants, etc.)

So take a look at Mint.com I think you’ll like it.  And, I think it will help you get your finances in line before the holidays ruin it anyway.

Matt you are so freakin hilarious <3
Banks are coming out with ideas like this, they're upload your different accouts and show you in pie chart form (who doesnt like Pie??). I just can't seem to stick with it.. it was cool at first but I don't need a virtual $$ babysitter… you only live once! Round of shots for the bar!!

HAHAHA I just made myself an account on this and the first thing it said was that I’m over budget on alcohol and bars!!!

I think Mint.com was just bought by one of the major companies. I think it was the company that makes the Quicken products.

haha – pleated pants. C’mon – give me more credit than that.

Sadly Mint.com doesn’t have my bank (boring as FirstNewYork FCU) but I have the iPhone application for it…I’m just waiting….patiently

Quicken has a similar free service that isn’t quite so judgmental. It has neat category breakdowns and provides some handy ratios to show how well you’re living within your means. I don’t think it’s ever yelled at me for spending too much on wine.

How secure is this? I am not sure if I want a 3rd…4th..who knows 5th party having access to all of my private financial information…what about hackers? Did anyone see the scary 60 minutes story about banking terrorism last week?

Awesome idea, but I like to be in the dark about my spending habits. I’m okay at it but I’m sure it would show me that I drink too much alcohol and coffee, and I spend way too much on gas driving to and from soccer. And frankly, I don’t want some website telling me how much I suck at life every day :)

I am not sure I want to know….and I don’t think my husband and I would be kissing because of the results….Mint might cause divorces or at least a major bitch session about who is worse with $….I do like the pleated pants comment, you are too funny and upfront
